Abstract Body : The modifications in the pattern of the hepatic vascular supply are well-known. However, the performance of various surgical procedures in the supracolic compartment requires detailed knowledge of the anatomical variations of the hepatic blood vessels and their precise identification. An accessory hepatic artery might be a challenge for the general surgeons and radiologists and cause a variety of intra- and postoperative complications. We report a case of an accessory left hepatic artery, found in a female cadaver, aged 86, during a routine dissection at the Department of Biomedical Science, Mercer School of Medicine, Columbus, GA. The artery arose from the left gastric artery, travelled upwards and entered the left lobe of the liver at an independent site from porta hepatis. The presence of accessory hepatic arteries is of a great clinical significance. Their misinterpretation during radiological examination or their injury during surgery might lead to profuse intraoperative bleeding or necrosis of liver parenchyma and compromise the postoperative results.
