Peripheral nerve injuries result in significant disability in both upper and lower extremities. Nerve transfers offer a unique solution to the challenging recovery by "rewiring" healthy synergistic nerves to the denervated muscle. With advanced understanding of nerve anatomy and continuous improvements in nerve surgery, various surgical options for nerve transfers are available to improve function throughout the body. In this presentation, power of nerve transfers for both upper and lower extremity nerve injuries will be presented. To promote the success of the nerve transfers, the critical aspects and technical considerations of the surgeries will also be highlighted including preoperative planning and postoperative rehabilitation.
