“You should publish your teaching. That should be easy!” Perhaps you have heard this statement during your career. As anatomists have embraced health professions education (HPE) scholarship, there is a natural push to promote such scholarship for career development. However, this statement fails to address the necessary steps to get published in HPE. In this panel discussion, faculty experts will demystify what anatomists need to do to improve the odds of successfully getting published in HPE. The session will be structured according to the following format: 1. Introduction of three speakers and brief background of how each ended up in HPE (10 min) 2. What Gets You Published and NOT Published in HPE - Discussion of the current status of HPE as a field of scholarly inquiry and what anatomists need to know about “hot topics” in HPE; and getting started; (15 min) 3. So Many Choices: Selecting a Target Journal - Finding a home for your work and choosing between journals and article types, and how to effectively share your work (15 min) 4. Behind the Scenes: Your Paper from Submission to Publication - Discussion of the “typical” peer-review process, with a look at what happens and why; publication timeline and board processs; selecting reviewers; hawk and dove approaches in reviewing (15 min) 5. Open Floor Discussion and Q&A (40 min) – Audience submitted questions and those developed by the moderator
