Shamsul Alam is a third-year medical student at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. During university, in his native country Bangladesh, he began his journey in medicine as a team leader in the Physically Challenged Development foundation where he and his team helped empower individuals with disabilities through social, academic, and vocational programs. His efforts ensured these individuals were able to pursue their personal interests that were gratifying yet financially sustainable. As an undergraduate student in Baruch College at the City University of New York, he participated as a volunteer in IVHQ Ghana where he divided his time assisting with Malaria testing in impoverished communities and schools with little access to quality healthcare by organizing wound care supplies and testing kits while also focusing his efforts in educating adolescents about safe sexual health and sexually transmitted illness prevention. Last summer, he joined the Boston Leadership Institute where he pursued a passion for teaching and counseling a group of STEM high school students about the art of medicine by introducing them to pediatrics and general surgery through interactive lectures, labs, and hands-on activities. Shamsul now devotes his time as a third-year medical student to three ongoing ophthalmology, anatomy, and pediatric research in post-operative healing of the cornea, Utilization of Virtual Reality in Anatomy Education, and marijuana use in adolescents, respectively.
