Dr. Carleton is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Maryland. She specializes in the molecular basis of sensory biology, and its role in speciation. Following formal training in chemical engineering (B.S.) and physical chemistry (PhD, post-doc, research scientist), she rediscovered biology. Using her love of light and spectroscopy, she studies vision and visual communication in fishes from the Great Lakes of Africa to coral reefs. She uses a diversity of approaches including molecular biology and genomics to understand the genetic basis of visual sensitivities, field studies to understand the signals and light environments driving visual communication, and behavioral experiments to examine the implications of visual diversity.
