Dr. Kurt H. Albertine’s basic science and translational research is focused on bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a worldwide public health problem in terms of mortality and long-term morbidities. Despite the magnitude of the pediatric health problem of BPD, its causes are not completely understood, and effective treatment is unavailable. Kurt’s contributions have been possible in part because of his unique large-animal physiological models: ventilated preterm lambs and former preterm lambs. Kurt has taken his discoveries to individual cell types in the lung and then to the genes controlling the developmental trajectory of those cell types. The results are leading to a change in basic assumptions about the molecular basis of BPD and its co-morbidities. Kurt is Principal Investigator of three active extramurally funded projects that are testing efficacy of potential treatments for BPD. Kurt’s laboratory is in the rare position to contribute to closing the loop from bed-to bench-to bed. Kurt’s lamb intensive care unit (LICU) provides an unparalleled training ground for young scientists. To date, his direct trainees’ number is more than 280 developing scientists. The majority are undergraduate students (about 200 and counting, half have gone to medical schools). Many graduates have become pediatricians, including neonatologists, and pediatric anesthesiologists. Kurt is an internationally renowned instructor of grant and manuscript writing, and scientific public speaking. He led many workshops while Editor-in-Chief of The Anatomical Record (2006-2020). Kurt’s recognitions for contributions in research and mentoring and training include elected Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science (FAAAS), Fellow of the American Association for Anatomy (FAAA), and member in the American Pediatric Society. Kurt’s 2023 recognitions are the Mary Ellen Avery Award jointly from the American Pediatric Society/Society for Pediatric Research, and the AJ Ladman Exemplary Service Award from the AAA.
