Jean-Pierre Timmermans (JPT) (63y, °1959) graduated as BaSc/MaSc in Zoology (UHasselt (1979) and UAntwerp (1981) respectively), obtained his PhD in 1987 (Brussels) and Habilitation for Higher Education in 1994 (Antwerp). Since 2003, he is full professor at the Department of Veterinary Sciences of UAntwerp, chair of the Laboratory of Cell Biology & Histology and director of the Antwerp Centre for Advanced Microscopy. He has been vice-rector for Research and Innovation at the University of Antwerp from 2008-2016. He also serves as member of the executive committee of the UA research council. His main research interests relate to the ANS, with specific attention to neuroimmune interactions in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Recent research activities are focused on the brain-gut-microbiome axis and neurodegeneration. He is internationally recognized for his major contributions to the intrapulmonary chemo/mechanoreceptors in vertebrate lungs and pioneering work in the morphological and electrophysiological features of the ENS. He is (co-)author of 350 WoS A1 articles having received >15,700 citations (H-index=54). He is inventor of 2 patents. He was AstraZeneca Foundation Chair Holder (1999-2001). He is a foreign member of the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina. He is a former president of the Royal Belgian Society for Microscopy, the International Society of Autonomic Neuroscience and the Anatomische Gesellschaft(AG). He is a fellow of the AAA and an honorary fellow of the AG. He is/was a member of the governing bodies of multiple scientific agencies and societies including the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology(VIB), the Royal Belgian Society for Microscopy, the Belgian Society for Cell and Developmental Biology, the Dutch Anatomical Society, the AG, the ISAN, …. He served/serves in the editorial board of The Anatomical Record(AR), Annals of Anatomy, Advances Anat Cell Biol, …. and acted as European AE for the AR for 30 years (1993-2022).
